HOCHTIEF demolished and replaced four road-over-rail bridges in central London as part of TfL’s Structures and Tunnels Investment Portfolio (STIP). Power Road Bridge carries the A406 North Circular over two Network Rail lines.

Key features:

  • Road-over-rail bridge demolition and construction
  • Service bridge
  • Temporary footbridge
  • Complex utilities diversions
  • Traffic Management

As it was imperative to avoid lane closures on the busy North Circular, we delivered the work in two phases, transferring traffic to one side of the bridge while we demolished and rebuilt the other side. We also installed a new prefabricated service bridge beside the original structure over one night shift, closing the two northbound lanes and operating a contra flow system in the remaining two lanes to maintain traffic flows.

The bridge deck beams were precast offsite then delivered ‘just-in-time’ to ease congestion. We also recycled 95% of materials and sourced fill from a local supplier who removed surplus material for disposal after deliveries, saving huge numbers of vehicle movements and carbon emissions.

We won a Silver Green Apple Award, Silver Considerate Constructors Scheme Award, a Beacon Award for outstanding health and safety performance and Best Vegetable Plot, Best Newcomer and Best Cultivated Garden in the Transport for London Stations in Bloom competition. The bridge was completed in July 2019.
