Health, Safety and Wellbeing

The health, safety and wellbeing of our workforce is our main priority and a strong focus on health and safety underpins everything that we do. Our Integrated Management System (IMS) is accredited to OHSAS 18001:2007 (soon to be ISO 45001:2018) and we are committed to continually seeking better and safer ways to work and using best practice methodologies across our operations.

HOCHTIEF is a British safety council certified member and a chartered member of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH). We are also engaged in the Infrastructure Safety Leadership Group (ISLG): a rail industry professional forum attended by Network Rail, the supply chain and RSSB which promotes cross industry sharing of identified safety issues and recommendations.

Our robust Behavioural Safety Programme (BSP) empowers our whole workforce to take responsibility for health and safety and provides training covering all aspects of health, safety and wellbeing and the consequences of failing to raise concerns. Our updated BSP has led to an increase in close calls reported and is driving positive performance, not only within our business, but across our supply chain.

The effectiveness of our company health and safety culture is reflected in the myriad health and safety awards that we have achieved in recent years, including various Network Rail Star and Starlite awards, two Transport for London Beacon Awards and RoSPA Silver and Gold awards at our Chislehurst Bridge Replacement, Hitchin Grade Separation and Reading Station Upgrade projects.

We firmly believe that the mental and emotional wellbeing of our people is just as important as their physical health. We have staff trained in Mental Health First Aid, with the skills to discuss mental health issues sensitively, and we empower our people to recognise signs that a colleague may be struggling, and to report their concerns so that we can provide appropriate support.
