On the A465 Heads of the Valley scheme, HOCHTIEF widened a 6.2km section of the A465 from a 3-lane single carriageway to a dual 2-lane carriageway. Our works also included a new grade separated junction, two major roundabouts and fourteen new structures, including bridges, retaining walls and culverts.
- 6.2km Dual carriageway
- 7 bridges
- 100m long, 15m high retaining walls with gabion stone facing
- 3 grade separated junctions
- 5 roundabouts
- Utilities diversions
- Environmental mitigation measures
- Archaeological assessments
With the work mainly completed on-line, every aspect of our delivery was designed to maintain traffic flows.
Over 25 Traffic Management phasing changes were implemented over the project, and we coordinated extensively with stakeholders to ensure that their needs were accommodated in our plans.
The structures across the scheme were developed to a standard design focusing on buildability. This sped up construction, saving time and cost in design, installation and future maintenance and minimised the period of disruption during their construction.
Our economical design for the road foundation enabled us to use 1,200,000m³ of excavated material to build embankments and landscape features. This avoided both import and disposal of materials to save both money and vehicle movements.
As the area is sensitive and prone to flooding, we worked closely with the Environment Agency and Local Authorities to ensure swift issue resolution and gain consents.
