HOCHTIEF successfully built a single-span integral road bridge over the railway to replace a level crossing that was being decommissioned. Our scope of works included highways construction, reinforced earth embankments and approach ramps, utilities diversions and significant stakeholder management. The new bridge completely removes the interface of public vehicles with the railway, greatly increasing safety.

The project was highly sensitive with complex stakeholder requirements due to the major rail incident that took place in 2004. Working closely with Network Rail we built good relationships with the local community and Ufton Nervet Survivor’s Support group through public consultations, events and regular communication. We also established a visitor’s centre on site, with a 3D model of the finished bridge, allowing members of the public to come in and learn about the project.
To minimise disruption and maximise efficiency, we precast the concrete bridge beams offsite and lifted them in pairs during rail possessions, halving the number of lifts required and saving time. The parapet brickwork cladding was also completed offsite and the parapets delivered ready for installation, avoiding in-situ working and increasing safety.
We saved Network Rail £95k by designing an alternative above-ground diversion for a Thames Water pipe, avoiding costly temporary works and having to work in dangerous ground conditions. We completed the main bridge works on time within the planned possessions.We achieved a Considerate Constructors Performance Beyond Compliance Award and a Network Rail Sustainability Award for working with the community. The bridge opened in December 2016 to positive feedback from the local community and “provided a sense of closure” to members of the Ufton Nervet Survivor’s Support Group.
