STIP: Power Road – Highways
HOCHTIEF is delivering the demolition and replacement of four road-over-rail bridges in central London as part of TfL’s Structures and Tunnels Investment Portfolio (STIP). We are currently replacing Power Road Bridge, which carries the A406 North Circular over two Network Rail lines, phasing the works carefully to limit disruption to the London road and rail networks.
- Road-over-rail bridge demolition and construction
- Service bridge
- Temporary footbridge
- Complex utilities diversions
- Traffic Management
As it was imperative to avoid lane closures on the busy North Circular, we optimised our construction methodology to minimise disruption.
When investigation works required full road closures, we completed them midweek at night, to reduce congestion. We also installed the prefabricated steel service bridge over one night shift, closing the two northbound lanes and operating a contra flow system in the remaining two lanes to maintain traffic flows.
We avoided a full closure of the North Circular during bridge demolition by adopting a highly innovative approach where we kept one side of the bridge open to traffic while we demolished and rebuilt the other side. Extensive design assessments ensured the feasibility of this method and enabled us to safely replace the bridge in two phases.
To further reduce our impact on the road network, the bridge deck beams were pre cast offsite then delivered ‘just-in-time’ to ease congestion. We also recycled 95% of materials and sourced fill from a local supplier who removed surplus material for disposal after deliveries, saving huge numbers of vehicle movements and carbon emissions. We won a Silver Considerate Constructors Scheme Award and a Beacon Award for outstanding health and safety performance. The final works on the bridge are due to be completed by summer 2019.
