STIP: Power Road – Bridges & Structures
HOCHTIEF is delivering the demolition and replacement of four road-over-rail bridges in central London as part of TfL’s Structures and Tunnels Investment Portfolio (STIP). We are currently replacing Power Road Bridge, which carries the A406 North Circular over two Network Rail lines, phasing the works carefully to limit disruption to the London road and rail networks.
- Road-over-rail bridge demolition and construction
- Service bridge
- Temporary footbridge
- Complex utilities diversions
- Traffic Management
To avoid a full closure of the North Circular during bridge demolition, we adopted a highly innovative approach where we kept one side of the bridge open to traffic while we demolished and rebuilt the other side. Extensive design assessments ensured the feasibility of this method and enabled us to safely replace the bridge in two phases.
We optimised the bridge design to maximise offsite prefabrication, allowing us to lift in structural elements during short rail possessions and road closures. The reinforced concrete bridge beams were precast offsite then delivered ‘just-in-time’ to ease congestion. The parapets were cast integral with the outer edge beams, allowing the whole section to be lifted in during a single possession.
We diverted the services running over the old bridge into a separate service bridge, made from weathering steel to reduce maintenance requirements. We installed the prefabricated service bridge during a railway possession while operating a contraflow system on the road to maintain traffic flows. We also created a temporary walkway over the service bridge so that pedestrians could cross on both sides of the road.
We won a Silver Considerate Constructors Scheme Award and a Beacon Award for outstanding health and safety performance. The final works on the bridge are due to be completed by summer 2019.
