On Bath Corridor, HOCHTIEF delivered clearance and enabling works for Overhead Line Electrification (OLE) along 34 miles of the Great Western Mainline. Part of Network Rail’s £3bn Great Western Electrification programme (GWEp), the contract included station modifications, bridge reconstructions, and extensive stakeholder management.

Key features:

  • Bath Spa, Keynsham and Oldfield Park station modifications
  • Platform extensions
  • 8 overbridge reconstructions: 5 footbridges, 2 road bridges, 1 aqueduct
  • Parapet modifications
  • OLE works
  • Stakeholder management
  • Environmental monitoring in World Heritage site

We planned all operations from a central project office to ensure full coordination across multiple worksites and possessions. Four satellite site compounds provided material delivery and storage areas and allowed Road Rail Vehicles to access the track to distribute materials to other sites.

We used a detailed 3D model to interrogate designs, sequence works and coordinate with other contractors, allowing us to resolve any issues before starting onsite. The model also helped us to explain our plans to stakeholders and gain approvals for the works during the Easter 2017 Temporary Period of Disruption 3 (TPOD3) at the Grade 2* listed Bath Spa Station.

TPOD3 was planned for over two years, involved various possessions over 16 days, and was the lead worksite in the entire UK network. During the TPOD, we widened both platforms at Bath Spa Station – keeping one platform open during the week to minimise disruption –  re-surfaced Keynsham Station, demolished an aqueduct and coordinated all work with a track lower. We met all milestones during the TPOD, handing the platforms back on time with no faults.

We won a Green Apple Award 2017 for our work at Bath Spa Station and achieved STAR Awards at the Shockerwick site and Somerset & Dorset Bridge.
